DEATH FOLLOWS OPERATION
Simon Van Der Helm of Akron Passed Away Last Thursday
Simon Van Der Helm of Akron, a former resident of this community, passed away last Thursday at the Akron hospital, following an operation for appendicitis which he submitted to just a week preceding his death.
Funeral services were held at the American Lutheran church at Akron at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. Samuelson in charge. Interment was made at Akron.
Simon Van Der Helm was born in Renkum, Holland, July 27, 1888, and passed away Sept. 13, 1931, at the age of 43 years, 1 month and 16 days.
He came to America in 1913 and worked on a farm near Sioux Center.
In 1914 he was married at which time he was employed by E. Brunsting.
After being in this country for two years he engaged in farming for himself on a farm east of Hawarden and later he farmed near Hudson. For the past five years he has lived in the Akron vicinity and for the past two years he has been employed by Ernest Anderson on a farm northwest of Akron.
He was reared in the Christian Reformed faith but when he moved to Akron he united with the Lutheran church as there was no church of his denomination in that city. He was an industrious man and worked hard to provide for his family.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife and seven children, John Kryn, aged 15, Allen, 12, Marie, 11, Johnnie, 9, Simon, 4, Henry, 3, and Bessel, 7 months. One child, a baby 18 months old, preceded him in death in 1920 and was buried at Hawarden.
He is also survived by his father, six brothers and four sisters, who reside in Holland.
The passing of Mr. Van Der Helm was a severe blow to his wife and children, who needed his companionship and help so badly.
Sincere sympathy is extended to the sorrowing ones in their bereavement.
Friends of the deceased of the Hawarden, Ireton and Alcester vicinity who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Dick Vande Pol, Mr. and Mrs. Melis Otten, Mr. and Mrs. E. Brunsting and son, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Hop and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Vander Sluis, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Schotanus and family, John Bos, Mr. and Mrs. Lembert Van Wyhe and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Kamstra and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Hamersma and family, John Hamersma, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kramer and the Otten brothers.
