Joan Waterbury was welcomed into this world by her parents the late Fay and Luceen (Stinehart) Waterbury on July 20, 1938 on the family farm in Union County, South Dakota. She was baptized in the Methodist Church and she cherished her faith.

Joan graduated from Akron High School in 1956. Soon after she married Marvin Fred Stotz of Akron; together they welcomed five children: Marnie, Tim, Darla, Darwin and Renae. They later divorced. Raising five children as a single parent was a struggle, but she shared her faith and instilled her strong work ethic into her children. She then married the love of her life, Marvin Coleman, in November 1979. To this union the family welcomed another son and brother, Clayton. Marvin passed suddenly on July 4, 1993. Once again to become a single parent, she continued to instill her faith and work ethic, working multiple jobs at a time to support her family.

Joan’s strong work ethic showed in her years of dedication to Otis Radio in Hawarden and to the Akron Westfield Community School District as a secretary. She never believed in a bad child and had a kind word about every single student. Many times she provided school supplies from her own pocket or made sure she had something sweet in her drawer to help a student make it through the day. After retirement from the public school, she wasn’t one to sit still and continued working part time at Walmart in the sewing department as she loved talking sewing and crafts with customers.

Joan had many hobbies including knitting and crocheting (of which every holiday season, she loved having her children and grandchildren pick a favorite blanket or doily). She loved going to auctions, doing word search puzzles, and working on the Waterbury Family Tree. She truly loved and is very proud of her family, past and present.

Survivors include her children: Marnie (Brad) Wells of Stuart, Iowa, Darla (Chuck) Utesch of Akron, Iowa, Darwin (Jody) Stotz of Phoenix, Arizona, Renae Miller of Gladbrook, Iowa, and Clayton Coleman of Algona, Iowa: her brothers: Fay “Babe” Waterbury Jr. of Wichita, Kansas, and Larry Waterbury of Elk Point, South Dakota, and Merlowe (Chau) Anderson; sisters: Kay Anderson and Carol (John) Wiersma; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death her parents: Fay and Luceen (Stinehart) Waterbury and Milford Anderson; husband, Marvin Coleman; son, Tim Stotz; son-in-law Clint Miller; brothers: Kervin Charles Waterbury, Marlin Alroy Waterbury, and Michael Eric “Mike” Anderson; and sisters: Janiece Waterbury Waterman and Lori Anderson Hansen.
