Funeral Thursday for prominent legionnaire
Edward W Utech, 88, Le Mars, retired farmer, and active civic leader, died Monday, July 7, 1986, at Floyd Valley Hospital after a brief illness He was hospitalized May 31
The Funeral will be at 2 pm Thursday at Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars Rev Robert Grupp will officiate and burial will be in Le Mars Memorial Cemetery under the direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Utech was born Oct 25, 1897, on a farm near Le Mars to William and Mary Piepenburg Utech. He lived on the farm until he entered army service in World War I Upon returning, he farmed in the Le Mars area. In 1936 he went into the John Deere Farm implement business in Orange City retiring in 1951 The last 25 years he has lived in Le Mars.
His marriage to Clara Blumer took place on Feb 3, 1920. in Le Mars, They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in February. The couple wintered in Florida for many years.
Mr. Utech was a member of Presbyterian United Church of Christ. a lifetime member of Wasmer Post 241. American Legion, Last Man's Club, Giblem Lodge 322, Abu Bekr Temple, and Le Mars Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of Hospital Dads, working for the welfare of children’s burn centers sponsored by the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors are his wife, Clara, Le Mars, a son, Robert. Le Mars. a daughter, Mrs. Miller (Marilyn) Glanzer of Sioux Fails, five grandchildren. six great-grandchildren, two sisters. Mrs. Ed (Mamie) Pech, and Mrs. Henry (Margaret) Loos. both of Le Mars, three brothers, Frank Utech of Morris, Minn, Raymond Utech of Mesa, Ariz and Lawrence Utech of Scoby, Mont; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and a brother
