Martha J. Vander Tuig, 96, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars. Funeral Services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow will officiate. Private family burial will take place at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Monday.

Martha Johanna Vander Tuig was born on July 3, 1921, in Sioux County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Frances (Meyer) Janssen. She was raised near Le Mars, Iowa where her grandfather, Rev. J.D. Meyer, was pastor of Christ Lutheran Church. Martha was Baptized on July 17, 1921 and Confirmed on April 14, 1935. She graduated from Ireton High School in 1938. Martha furthered her education at Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars and earned a teaching certificate. She later taught in rural schools in Sioux County and Seney Elementary.

Martha and George F. Vander Tuig were united in marriage on December 28, 1944 at Christ Lutheran Church while George was on Survivor’s Leave from the US Navy during WWII. The couple lived in several places that included San Diego, Boston, Newport News, Virginia and the Great Lakes area, before settling in Le Mars in 1953. George opened Clear Vue Television where, in later years, Martha did the bookkeeping. At that time they joined St. John’s Lutheran Church where Martha’s parents were members. Martha taught Sunday School, Bible School and Catechism classes. She was a faithful worker at church and member of her circle and Bible Study. She served on Altar Guild for many years. She was also active in her community and in all of the activities of their children.

During their retirement years, Martha and George spent their winters in Green Valley, Arizona. George passed away on February 13, 2007. Martha became a resident at Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars in 2012. Her family is grateful for the wonderful care given by her pastors, Brentwood and Hospice of Siouxland.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter and her husband, Sharyl and Rev. Curt Miller of Eau Claire, WI; a son and his wife, Rev. Mark Vander Tuig and his wife, Candice of Altoona, IA; a daughter-in-law, Jane Vander Tuig of Hampton, NE; grandchildren, Eric (Dawn) Miller, Nathan (Rev. Sarah) Miller, Rev. Paul (Marie) Miller, Adam Vander Tuig, Marci Vander Tuig (Weston Poor), Laura (Mathew) Lukens and Emily (Pastor Noah) Ruppert; great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Charlotte Miller, Soren, Lydia and Henry Miller, Ruth Miller, George E.Vander Tuig, Elliot Lukens and Joel Ruppert; sisters, Marie Van Roekel of Phoenix, AZ, Leona (Bill) Lancaster of Springfield, MO and Dorothy (Gene) Hanson of Palm Desert, CA; and several nieces and, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; son, Rev. Stephen Vander Tuig; brothers, Lorenz (Bernice), Alfred (JoAnn), Fred and Elmer Janssen; and a brother-in-law, Bernie Van Roekel.

Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Brentwood Good Samaritan Village, or a charity of choice.
