George W. McCoun Dead
George W. McCoun was born April 3, 1828, Cayuga county, N.Y., and died in Kingsley, Iowa, March 14, 1908, aged seventy-nine years, eleven months, and eleven days. He was married to Arvilla Bowker, of Groton, Tompkins county, N. Y., January 13, 1850. To them were born eleven children, seven boys, and four girls: one son and daughter died in infancy, the other nine are all living an have families of their own. Nelson, Daniel and Charles live at Kingsley, Iowa; Ida, at Kalispell, Montana; Emma and George, in Spokane, Washington; Lester, in Berger, Oklahoma; Ernest, in San Antonio, Texas and Villa, at Maryville, Missouri. Thirty grandchildren were born to them, twenty-eight of whom are living.Mr. and Mrs. McCoun first came to Iowa in 1857 and to Kingsley in 1899, where they have since resided. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church Tuesday afternoon at 1:30.
The floral offerings were very beautiful, contributions being made by the Woman's Relief Corps, the G.A.R., and the W.O.T.U., of two of these organizations Mrs. McCoun is a member. The Relief Corps and Grand Army marched from their hall in a body and sat in a body during the services at the church.
When the country needed men in the 60s to fight her battles, Mr. McCoun shouldered his musket and with the rest of the Grand Army marched to the field of battle and served his country honorably and received an honorable discharge. Thus another of the country's defenders has answered the last roll-call.
The body was laid to rest in the beautiful Kingsley cemetery, according to the ritual of the Grand Army of the Republic. "Grandma" McCoun and all of the family have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in this hour of bereavement.
