Obituary for Lowell Clayton Kamradt

SIOUX CITY -- Lowell C. Kamradt, 83, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chuck Wolff of Riverside Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Lowell was born Jan. 24, 1926, to Rudy and Nora (Olson) Kamradt in Akron, Iowa. He grew up in the Westfield, Iowa area, where he attended rural schools. He graduated from Westfield Consolidated School and helped on the family farm.

He married Patricia Ambrose in 1949 and had three sons. They later divorced. He then married Phyllis Petty Welch on Oct. 20, 1980, in Elk Point, S.D.

He worked for the city of Sioux City early in his working career. Upon leaving the city, he went to work for Kay-Dee Feeds for several years. He then returned to the city of Sioux City, running a sanitation collection route for more than 25 years. He then went to work for Wells Fargo as a security officer. He was awarded numerous commendations as guard of the month. He finished his career in 2002, when his health forced him to retire.

Nicknamed "Smiley", he always had a broad happy smile for everyone he would meet. He loved a conversation with anyone and about anything, while having a cup of coffee. He also enjoyed his lawn tractor and working in the yard. His greatest joys in these last years were time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Phyllis; his sons, Jerry and Lori Kamradt and Danny and Nova Kamradt; his stepchildren, Sharon and Jim Schettler, Steve and Lanay Welch, Leo and Sandy Welch and Vincent Welch; his grandchildren, Kari Kamradt, Raelynn Kamradt, Jay and Angie Kamradt, Jessica and Travis Harris, Jason and Amelia Schettler, Bridget and Matt Breen, Jerod and Tracy Welch, Jennifer and Kyle Schoen, Robert and Carrie Welch, Kyle Welch and Jennifer Deraad; his great-grandchildren, Angelica Kamradt, Sylvia Kamradt, Kaden and Kaci Harris, Rachel and Sarah Schettler, RJ, Elizabeth and Jason Breen, Hannah and Hunter Welch, Tyler and Ali Welch, Jay and Kiley Schoen and Elie Welch; a sister, Gladys and Cliff Faust; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark; a brother, Lloyd; and a great-granddaughter, Anna Marie Schoen.
