Frank Hentges, longtime postmaster, dead at 88

Frank C. Hentges, 88, retired Le Mars postmaster and member of a prominent pioneer family, died Saturday, Jan. 3, at Floyd Valley hospital after a stroke he suffered several months ago at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Le Mars and served as postmaster from 1933 until his retirement from the post office in 1951.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic church, with Rev. Dean Walker officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery under direction of the Luedtke funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Monday.

The rosary will be recited Monday at the funeral home at 7 p.m. by Court Santa Maria, Catholic Daughters of America, at 7:30 p.m. by parishioners and at 8:30 p.m. by Trinity council, Knights of Columbus, of which he was a past grand knight and a founding members.

Mr. Hentges was born July 18, 1881, in Le Mars, a son of the late John and Mary (Berg) Hentges. He was baptized by the first pastor of St. Joseph church six years after its founding.

He attended St. Joseph school and Le Mars high school and later entered Notre Dame university at South Bend, Ind. Following his graduation from Notre Dame, he was associated with his father and brother in the numerous clothing and shoe stores they operated throughout Iowa and South Dakota.

He was one of St. Joseph’s Catholic church’s most dedicated and loyal parishioners. He sand in the choir for many years and served the parish, school, Gehlen schools and the community at large in many capacities throughout his life.

He was past grand knight of Trinity council, Knights of Columbus, pas exalted ruled of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, pas president of the Le Mars Rotary club and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Dana (Elizabeth) Hoffman, Cecelia and Clara Hentges and five brothers, John, Ed, Joe, Steven and Leonard Hentges.

Surviving are a sister, Clementine Hentges and a brother, Roman Hentges both of Le Mars, and several nieces and nephews.
