Storm Lake Pilot-Tribune - March 16, 1950 -

William Ellis, son of Mr and Mrs Raselas Ellis, was born at Grant City Iowa on Nov 26, 1892 and departed this life on Wednesday afternoon, March 8. Although his heart had been in a weakened condition for some time, it was only a week ago that he had a severe heart attack which resulted in his sudden death.

Mr Ellis was employed for many years as section foreman on the railroad, during which time he made his home with his sister Mrs Flora Libby at Odebolt. On Aug 24, 1917 he enlisted in the US army. He was in Co B of the 34th Division, First Battalion and received his honorable discharge May 12, 1919. He was a member of the American Legion.

On June 22 1929 he was united in holy wedlock with Ann Marguerite Ludwigs, the ceremony having been performed near Hawarden. They lived at Alta for 3 years and the past 14 years here at Storm Lake. This union was blessed with two daughters: Mrs Don Christensen and Patricia Jean.

His parents as well as three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Mourning his departure are his widow, Mrs Ellis, his two daughters, two grandchildren; two brothers: Ward Ellis of Akron, CO and James of York, NE; two sisters: Mrs Flora Libby of Odebolt and Mrs Mable Hackenberry of Pinebridge, SD; and many friends and acquaintances.

Full military honors were accorded Mr Ellis. ..

Storm Lake Register - March 14, 1950 -

Full military honors were accorded at the funeral of W.H. Ellis, World War I veteran, Saturday afternoon by war veterans of Storm Lake and vicinity. The veterans ceremonial team accompanied the remains from the Sliefert Funeral home to the Lutheran church where a final service was held, and then to the Memorial Park cemetery where final rites were celebrated, with the Rev A.O. Bleeke of St John's Lutheran church officiating.

The American flag was presented to the next of kin by Rev F. Earl Burgess of the Methodist church, chaplain of Shaeffer post of the American Legion. The firing squad gave the rifle salute to the dead and taps were sounded. Bearers, all veterans of World War I, were Joe Wilhelmi, Byron Jones, Clair Roberts, Claus Sellden, Hal Richardson and Tony Sorenson. Color bearers were Paul Krueger and E.E. Owen. Color guard was Dave Scofield and Chuck Wheat, commander of Shaeffer post. Members of the firing squad were Commander W.B. Perry, Francis Renshaw, Donald R. Burlington, C. Wendell Pendleton, Fred Benberg, Dean Haight and Wilbur Hoch. Bugler was Marshall Holmes.

Mr Ellis is survived by his wife and two daughters, Patty Gene at home and Mrs. Don Christenson, also of Storm Lake.
