Jacob Gross Died at LeMars

Jacob Gross, 80, well known resident of LeMars for many years, passed away at his home last Friday, April 8th [1938], following an illness of four weeks. Mr. Gross contracted a severe cold which with the infirmities of age he was unable to overcome.

Funeral services were held at St. John’s Evangelical church in LeMars Monday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. Ralph H. Hunger, in charge. Interment was made in the LeMars cemetery. Those from Ireton who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Lindenman, Mrs. C. C. Cooper and son Cecil Jr., Mrs. Bertha Pluss, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Eilts, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vlotho and Mrs. Hugo Wellnitz.

Jacob Anton Gross was born at St. Gallen, Switzerland, Oct. 6, 1857. He received a good education in his native land and after he had finished high school he followed the trade of a bookbinder. He came to America in 1879 and followed his trade as a bookbinder until, due to his health, he sought outside work. Mr. Gross returned to his native land in 1888 for a visit and while there, on Feb. 23 of that year, he was united in marriage with Margaretha Zweifel and returned that spring to this country, locating on a farm near Beresford. Later they came to the vicinity of Ireton where they lived for more than 30 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Gross celebrated their golden wedding last Feb. 23 under the happiest circumstances and amidst the congratulations of hundreds of relatives and friends. He is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. Fred A. Utech and Miss Lena Gross, who conduct the K. & L. Gross Specialty Shop in LeMars, and one son, Fred A. Gross of Fort Hall, Idaho.
