Gertrude Ferguson
November 5, 1924 – December 8, 2014
Gertrude Ferguson, age 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 8, 2014.
Funeral services are at 1:00 PM, Friday, December 12, 2014, at Hampton-Vaughan Funeral Home, with burial in Crestview Memorial Park.
Gertrude was born November 5, 1924, the youngest child of Earl and Etta Michael, on a farm in western Iowa. She was God’s miracle baby, weighing only 2 pounds at birth. The doctor said she would not make it, but the midwife swaddled her in cloths, put her in a cigar box and placed her next to the wood burning stove. Later, Gertrude said, “I guess God had plans for me.” Though her mother died when Gertrude was only seven, she grew up to be a strong, energetic, and loving person. Taught to be responsible, honest, and hard-working, she helped on the farm and could drive a team of horses by the time she was a teenager. She graduated from high school in Westfield, Iowa, and attended Lemars Women’s College, then taught in a one-room school house in South Dakota.
She met John Ferguson while he was stationed in Sioux City, Iowa, during WWII. They married just before he shipped overseas; Gertrude worked in a factory in Los Angeles, California, helping with the war effort. After the war, they remained in California to raise a family of three children.Gertrude was a loving wife, mother, grandmother to generations of her family. Even while working a full time job, she was a fabulous cook, often sharing meals with the sick or homebound. She retired from Beckman Instruments, Fullerton, California, and moved with her husband to Wichita Falls, Texas, where they lived for over twenty years. Gertrude was an active member of Faith Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, where she taught a Ladies Sunday School class, sang in the choir, and was a true prayer warrior.
She was preceded in death by: John; her husband of 63 years, her parents, two brothers, two sisters, her two sons in law, a daughter in law, and a great great grandchild.
Survived by son Mike Ferguson, daughters Marilyn Meador and Michele Montz, 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.Family wishes to thank Presbyterian Manor for the loving care Gertrude received during the years she lived there.
