Death of Jacob Merryman

Jacob Merryman, one of the pioneer residents of the county, died at the home of his son-in-law, J. G. Koenig, on Saturday morning at the advanced age of eighty-eight years. His death was due to old age. He was remarkably rugged and healthy until a few weeks ago, when his powers began to fail.

He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, on June 29, 1816, and when a youth of sixteen came to the United States to Philadelphia. He settled in Baltimore in 1833. He was united in marriage to Caroline Gordon, and one child was born to them, Mrs. J. G. Koenig, of this city. Mr. Merryman came to Plymouth county in 1871. For more than thirty-five years he has made his home with his son-in-law, J. G. Koenig.

Mr. Merryman was well known to all the old residents of the county and especially among the Floyd Valley settlers, and was called “Uncle Jake” by scores of men who have been gray headed for years.

In his youth be affiliated with the United Brethren church and later with the United Evangelical church.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at the Emanuel church, Rev. H. D. Benardt, the pastor, and Rev. Emil Mueller, presiding elder, conducting the services, and was largely attended by old friends and neighbors.
