SIX SONS BORE THE CASKET
Goldie Brothers Pall Bearers at Father’s Funeral

The funeral of Richard Goldie, father of John E. Goldie and George Goldie of Sioux City, at one time publisher of the Sioux City Gazette and a pioneer of northwestern Iowa was held on Friday Afternoon at Crathorne, Plymouth county, Iowa. Six sons acted as pallbearers, as follows: Walter Goldie, publisher of the Wayne Democrat, Wayne, Nebraska; Will Goldie, publisher of the Cherokee Democrat; Charles Goldie, of Sheldon; Douglas Goldie of Crathorne; John R. Goldie and George Goldie, of Sioux City.
Mr. Goldie, who was over 85 years of age, died at the home of Mrs. Cheney Chace, a daughter, at Wayne, Nebraska. He had been confined to his bed only since Sunday. The deceased man was well known in Sioux City and the surrounding territory. He was born in Crathorne, Yorkshire, England, Oct 28, 1820. At the age of 18 he went to South America and later to Canada, locating at Toronto, where he was married January 1, 1848, to Katharine Pirie. In Canada he began a newspaper career, publishing the Bradford Chronicle and subsequently Paisley Advocate in the country.
In 1871 he moved to Sioux City and there established and published the Gazette. On coming to Sioux City, he took a homestead nine miles from LeMars and named it Crathorne, in honor of his birthplace. His last newspaper venture was the LeMars Sun, which he published for a number of years and until 1863, when he disposed of it and went to Wayne, spending most of his remaining days there. His wife died in Sioux City July 25, 1871. Four years ago he returned to England for a short time, visiting members of his family. He was the father of twelve children, eight of whom, six sons and two daughters survive.
