AN IOWA HOMESTEADER

MRS. VAN DYKE WAS RESIDENT HERE MANY YEARS

HAD EVENTFUL LIFE IN EARLY DAYS

Came from Pella Settlement to Orange City and After Grasshopper Devastation. Came to Le Mars with Her husband. Later Lived with Son

Mrs. Henrietta Van Dyke, a resident of Iowa for a made than a half century and an Iowa homesteader during the grasshopper plague of 1869, died at the Fourth Tuesday home of her son, H. Van Dyke, Tuesday afternoon. Death followed an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Van Dyke was 80 years old.

Mrs. Van Dyke was born in Holland April 4, 1842. At the age of 20 she was married to Wm. Teizen. Two years later the young couple and their infant child started for America. The child died at sea and three weeks after landing the husband succumbed, leaving the widow without a relative in America. A few months later a daughter was born.

In 1867 she was married to Albert Van Dyke in New Jersey. In 1868 they came west, settling near Pella, Iowa. The following year they took a homestead at Orange City, Iowa.

Unable to withstand the privations that accompanied the grasshopper plague of 1869, Mr. and Mrs Van Dyke abandoned their claim and moved to Le Mars, Iowa. Mr. Van Dyke died in 1902.

Mrs. Van Dyke went to Sioux City in 1909 and has since resided with her son.

Funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Thursday afternoon from the W. Harry Christy funeral chapel in Sioux City and the remains brought to Le Mars for interment.

In addition to her son, H. VanDyke she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Otto W. Broesamie, of Sioux City; Mrs. George Gilbert, of Lincolnville, Kan.; Mrs. William Tullis, of Hinton, Iowa, and two sons, Carl Van Dyke, of Yuba City, Cal., and Frank Van Dyke, of Long Beach. Cal.
