Friday, May 25, 2018Bernice Sitzman, 93, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Bernice Alda Lubben was born April 13, 1925 in Le Mars, the daughter of John Henry and Eva (Wendt) Lubben. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She attended school in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1943.
She was united in marriage to Anton "Tony" Joseph Sitzman on Nov. 9, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Shortly after their marriage, Bernice worked for Aalfs Manufacturing in Le Mars. After she and Tony started their family, she stayed home to raise her two sons and two daughters.
Later on, she worked for Hammers Restaurant in Le Mars and in the kitchen at Le Mars Community School until her retirement. Tony died Sept. 24, 1992. Bernice continued to make her home in Le Mars. In October 2009, she became a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars where she was active in the Women’s Circle for many years and also taught nursery Sunday School.
She and Tony enjoyed dancing. They attended dances for many years. She also enjoyed cooking.
Survivors include two daughters: Sandra Ann (Dean) Johansen of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, and Beth Marie (Bill) Drew of Kansas City; three granddaughters; one great-grandson; two sisters: Audrey (Arnis) Jakobsens of Elmhurst, Illinois and Hester (Jerry) Thoms of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law: Grace Lubben of Kansas City and Charlene Lubben of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tony Sitzman; two sons: Russell Martin Sitzman and Anthony John Sitzman; her siblings: Rosina (Herman) Ritter, Harm (Norma) Lubben, Martha Jo Lubben, Arthur Lubben, and Stanley Lubben.Funeral services will be 10 a.m., today (Friday), at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Plymouth Manor Care Center and/or the Le Mars Community School Foundation.
