Obituary for Arlene Toben

Arlene Mae (Wegner) Toben, 87, a resident at Akron Care Center, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 13, 2017 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St Mark Lutheran Church, 5200 Glenn Ave., in Sioux City. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City.

Arlene Mae Wegner was born on Sept. 5, 1929, to Alfred and Wanda (Whitney) Wegner, in Wausau, Neb. Arlene attended high school in Osmond, Neb., graduating with the class of 1948. After graduation, Arlene moved to Sioux City, where she attended Nettleton Business Training College. While going to college Arlene worked at The Biltmore Restaurant in Sioux City. After completing her training, Arlene spent a brief time doing business accounting work.

On Feb. 19, 1951, Arlene was united in marriage to John Toben Jr. To this union five children were born, Arlene Jean "Jeanie", Mike, Jack, Jim and Loren. In 1962, Arlene and John purchased their own farm five miles northwest of Akron in Union County, S.D. Arlene dedicated herself to being a hard working farm wife, loving mother and home maker for many years until her children were all grown. In 1988, Arlene took a position with Hardee's Restaurant on Gordon Drive, where she would spend the next 13 years as a biscuit maker, finally retiring in 2001.

In January 2015, Arlene moved to Akron Care Center where, after nearly 30 years of living apart, she took up residence in the room next door to John. To their family and those around them it was obvious that there was still a deep love and caring between Arlene and John.

Arlene was a dedicated member of the congregation at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Morningside for more than 25 years. Arlene attended church services regularly and enjoyed various church activities such as Bible study, Women's Circle and the Young at Heart group. Arlene especially looked forward to attending the annual summer picnic every year.

Arlene enjoyed traveling and went on trips to places such as San Diego, Branson, Nashville, Reno and many more. Arlene enjoyed working with her hands doing crafts and hobbies.

Arlene is survived by John Toben Jr. of Akron; daughter, Jeanie Wetrosky (Jim) of Sioux City; sons, Mike Toben (Pat) of Utica S.D., Jack (Dorothy) Toben of Sioux City, Jim (Kerri) Toben of Smithland, Iowa, and Loren (Tammie) Toben of Westfield, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Welcoming Arlene into heaven are her parents, Alfred and Wanda; her sisters, Dorothy Doer and Irene Zautke; grandchildren, Christy, Keith and Eric; and a host of other loving friends and relatives.
