FRED W. MEYER IS CALLED BY DEATH MONDAY MORNING

Last Rites Are Held Here Thursday For Esteemed Man

Fred W. Meyer, a widely known and respected citizen of this vicinity, and a resident of western Plymouth county for nearly forty-five years, passed away Monday morning, March 3, 1947, at the home of' his brother, Louis J. Meyer, at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 5 days.

Fred W. Meyer was born in Ohlman, Montgomery County, Illinois, on June 26, 1880. The son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Meyer, he was the eldest of a family of eleven children—seven sons and four daughters. Two sons and four daughters died in early childhood. In 1902, Fred moved with his family from their home in Illinois to a farm northeast of Akron, Iowa, known as the Gleason farm. On September 14, 1911, his mother passed away, and on February 21, 1913, his father departed this life. Since that time, he has made his home with his brothers, the past three years here with his brother, Louis J. Meyer, of Akron.

At the age of four years, Fred lost the sight of his eyes as the result of a severe case of measles. When a young man he attended. two terms of school at Gary, South Dakota, at the School for the Blind, where he learned the trade of piano tuning and broom making. Although handicapped by the loss of his eyesight, Fred lived a. very active life and over a long period of years had accomplished many useful pieces of work. He was able to travel from place to place and found great enjoyment in visiting among his numerous friends and acquaintances, who will miss his genial presence. While physically under a cloud of darkness most of his life Fred Meyer was mentally alert and his soul was filled with sunshine and good cheer. He found happiness in being kind and helpful to others, and satisfaction in a well-spent life. To those near and dear to him is extended the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

Surviving him are four brothers: Henry J. of Long Lake, Minn, William E., of Colome, S. D.; Edward J., of Tuthill, S. D., and Louis J., of Akron, besides a number of nephews and nieces. All the brothers were present for the last rites.

Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the Akron Methodist church, conducted by Rev. A. A. Howe. The pallbearers were Henry Cassen, Henry Collmann Ben Borchers, Fred Haage, Herman Friedrichs and James Trautt. Interment was in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery.
