Walter Roehrich, 93, of Hinton, Iowa, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Holy Spirit Retirement Community in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Merrill. Pastor Bert Burwell, A.i.M. will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by the Casper American Legion Post #477 of Hinton, Iowa will be at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2017, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Rexwinkel-Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.
Walter Ludwig Roehrich was born June 29, 1923 on a farm east of Hinton, Iowa, the son of Charles and Catherine (Wilkens) Roehrich. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. He attended country school in Plymouth County.
He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 19. He served his country while stationed in Europe during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the area.
After the service, he attended barber school in Sioux City and then owned and operated a barber shop in Hinton. He was united in marriage to Darlene Trometer on May 16, 1953 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Merrill. Early on, they made their home in Merrill until 1956, when they moved to Hinton. Later, Walter started farming part time with his brothers near Hinton. After some time, he started farming full time until retiring in 1982. Darlene passed away June 3, 2002. Following her passing, he continued to make his home in Hinton. In May of 2014, he became a resident of Holy Spirit Retirement Community in Sioux City.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Merrill. He was also a member of the Casper American Legion Post 477 of Hinton where he was also in the WWII Last Man Standing club. He loved watching baseball and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs. Through the years, he enjoyed playing cards, listening to “big band” music, and playing the lottery. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter: Patty Pageler of Sioux City, IA; a son: Randy (Michaeline) Roehrich of Hinton, IA; his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tim (Katie) Berry of Colorado and their children, Asa and Isaac; Justin Pageler of Sioux City and his daughter, Gracie; Katie Roehrich of San Diego, CA; Ashley (Matt) Brienzo of Sioux City and their son, Jacob; and Michael Roehrich of Hinton, IA; two sisters in law: Geraldine Wieck of Sioux City and Patricia Trometer of Merrill, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene Roehrich; and his siblings: Fritz, Richard, John, Henry, George, Charles, Emma, and two sisters in infancy.
