Note: His mother's maiden name is Holzman.

Joseph John Deters, 80, of 4501 Prince of Peace Place, a retired John Morrell & Co. employee, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at Prince of Peace Retirement Home.

Mr. Deters was born March 19, 1916, in Le Mars, Iowa. He served in the Army Medical Corp during World War II in the Philippines. After his discharge from the service, he returned to work in the freezer department of John Morrell & Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1981.

He married Frances Rush on May 9, 1951, in Sioux Falls. She died Feb. 9, 1987. He later married Ottilia Chenoweth on July 8, 1989, in Sioux Falls.

He was member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Marquette Council of Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 628, the American Legion Moose Club, and the Morrell Retirement Club.

In addition t his wife, survivors include one daughter, Gloria Deters of Sioux Falls; five stepsons: Ronald Rush of Bloomington, Minn.; Barry Rush of Bettendorf, Iowa; Alvin Chenoweth of Columbus, Ga.; Virgil Chenweth of Dayton, Ohio; and Jerry Chenoweth of Colorado; and five step-daughters: Paula Tollefson of Champaign, Ill.; Mrs. Keith (Angela) Feltz of Maryville, Tenn.; Mrs. Jim (Elaine) Backer of Casper, Wyo.; Lorraine Rich f Canton; and Mrs. Jerry (Marilyn) Cochrun of Sioux Falls; 29 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Francis of Salem; and Ralph of Sioux Falls.

Funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 3 p.m. today at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, with a 7 p.m. scripture vigil, followed by a Knights of Columbus/Catholic Daughters Rosary.

The family requests that expressions f sympathy take the form of donations to the Holy Spirit building fund.
