Skull Fracture Proves Fatal To James E. Kain

Succumbs To Injuries Within A Week Of Accident

James E. Kain 87, well known retired farmer, and a resident of Plymouth County for sixty-six years, died at his home, 115 Fifth Avenue SW., Friday, November 13 from injuries he received in a fall while entering his home a week before his death. Mr. Kain slipped and fell from the front steps of the residence and in the fall suffered a fracture of the skull and was unconscious the greater part of the time until death ensued.

James E. Kain was born at Clinton, Iowa, January 29, 1855, where he attended rural school and grew up on a farm and followed the occupation of farming all his life until retirement.

He came to Plymouth County when 21 years of age and in his youth broke hundreds of acres of virgin prairie sod into cultivation.

Mr. Kain was a brother of the late John C. Kain and the late R. H. Kain, both of whom were prominent in business and political circles in Plymouth County. John C. Kain in early days was a justice of the peace and associated in the land business in the boom times with the late George E. Richardson in Le Mars and Breckenridge, Minn.

R. H. Kain was elected mayor of Le Mars three times and while serving his third term was elected treasurer of Plymouth County, a position which he retained ten years.

James Kain never married but was more than a father to orphan nephews and nieces who will bear testimony to his kindness and generosity. Mr. Kain was honest in the highest degree, a good neighbor and citizen and a congenial companion, and had scores of friends who pay tribute to his memory.

The funeral was held Monday morning at St. James Church in this city and was largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. L. J. Cooper, pastor of the church, and interment made in St. James Cemetery.

Wiltgen’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
