Akron, IowaTHOS. J. REDMOND SUMMONED AFTER EXTENTED ILLNESS
Esteemed Akron Man Had Been Resident of This County Since 1878
Thos. J. Redmond, one of Akron’s best known and most highly esteemed citizens, passed away at his home in this city on Wednesday evening, January 18, 1933, after an extended illness of paralysis aged 67 years, 8 months, and 29 days.
He was first stricken while at work in the yard at his home on May 7, 1932, and after a few weeks was able to be about again.
Early last August he went to Rochester, Min., accompanied by his wife, and consulted the Mayo Clinic. Last October he was stricken a second time, from thee effects of which he was never able to rally, being confined to his bed for thirteen weeks, during which time he endured great suffering with Christian fortitude and patience. He was constantly cared for by his devoted wife, and all possible was done for his relief and comfort.
Thomas J. Redmond, son of James and Ann Redmond, was born April 19, 1865, at Platteville, Wis. At the age of 13 years, in 1878, he came to Plymouth County, Iowa, with his parents. They lived on a farm in Union Township, just south of Le Mars, for three years, and then moved to a farm near the old town of Crathorne, in Grant Township, and established a home in what was then a sparsely settled community.
He attended the parochial and public schools, assisted his father on the farm and grew to young manhood there. About the year 1890 he came to Akron and engaged in the real estate and insurance business with the late M. A. Agnes, later forming a partnership in the same line of business with his brother, M. W. Redmond, which continued under the name of Redmond Bros. up to the time of the death of M. W. Redmond on April 27, 1930. After that he was associated in the business with F. W. Burnett. On October 10, 1893, Mr. Redmond was united in marriage with Miss Loretta Dunn, of Akron, and they continued to make their home in Akron during all their married life.
Mr. Redmond was always keenly interested in public affairs, being a staunch advocate of Democratic principles, but did not seek political preferment. While strong in his own convictions, he also respected the opinions of others. Loyal to his community, he was always ready to support any progressive movement for its good. He was for many years a consistent member St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, of this city, and was a member of the Le Mars lodge of Elks. A man of strict integrity, of a kind and sympathetic nature, a most devoted husband and a great lover of home and the companionship of friends, he was held in high esteem by all who knew him. A host of friends will mourn the passing off this fine citizen and miss his genial presence in the daily walks of life. All join in extending sympathy to the bereaved wife and other near relatives.
Besides his widow, he is survived by one brother and two sisters, Maurice Redmond, Miss Anna Redmond and Miss Mary B. Redmond, all of Le Mars, Iowa.
Two brothers, M. W., of Akron, and James, of Le Mars, preceded him in death within the past three years.
Funeral services were held last Friday morning at 9:30 o’clock in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, conducted by Rev. Fr. J. A. Roder. There was a large attendance at the service. Local business places closed during the funeral hour as a mark of respect.
The pallbearers were Boyson Ross, Robert Ross, Frank Coyle, Chas, McCnville, F. W. Burnett and F. Smythe. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery.
Among the relatives from a distance attending the funeral were; Maurice Redmond and Misses Anna and Mary Redmond, of Le Mars; Mrs. James McCarthy, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel McCarthy, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Weir and Vetus McCarthy, all of Sheldon, Iowa. Many friends came from Le Mars and vicinity and other surrounding towns and country.
