M. W. REDMOND DIES FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS

Succumbs to Attack of Double Pneumonia—Funeral Held Tuesday

This community was stirred to deep sorrow by the death of Michael W. Redmond, a resident of Akron for their-five years, at his home Sunday afternoon at about 4:30 o’clock, of double pneumonia, following an illness of ten days, at the age of 67 years, 6 months, and 19 days.

Mr. Redmond was at his real estate and insurance office all day April 16, but was taken ill that evening with intestinal flu, and when his suffering became acute, home remedies were applied. The next day a physician was called and gave medical attention. His condition did not improve and pneumonia developed after which two nurses gave him constant attention, but he continued to gradually decline until the end, despite all that could be done.

Two years ago this spring Mr. Redmond suffered an attack of what was then a rather rare ailment, Malta or undulant fever, and was in bed nine weeks, his life then being despaired of. He was confined to his home most of the summer, but was able to go to his office in September of that year. He had not fully recovered his health and strength when stricken with his final illness.

Mr. Redmond served for many years as justice of peace and assessor and recently completed two terms as mayor of Akron. He was a prominent member of the Democratic Party in Plymouth County; also an official and leading member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. A suitable obituary of this esteemed citizen will appear in these columns next week. The community tenders its sincerest sympathy to the bereaved wife, son, brothers, sisters, and other relatives.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Father J. A. Roder in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 10 a. m. Tuesday were largely attended. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery here.

LAST RITES HELD FOR M. W. REDMOND

Was Active in Public Affairs of Community for Many Years

Mention was made in these columns last week of the death of M. W. Redmond, a prominent resident of Akron for thirty-five years, at his home here Sunday, April 27, 1930, at 4:20 p.m., at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 19 days. He had been in poor health for two years, following an attack of Malta fever, but his death was due to pneumonia after an illness of ten days.

Michael W. Redmond was born near Platteville, Wisconsin, October 8, 1862, a son of James and Ann Redmond, and resided in that vicinity until his parents and family came west in 1878 and settled in Union Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, south of Le Mars. Three years later they moved to a farm near the old town of Crathorne, west of Le Mars, where he attended the country schools and later the Le Mars Normal school, where he took a business and commercial course. He came to Akron in 1895, and soon afterward he and his brother, Thomas J. Redmond, formed a partnership in the real estate business, which continued up to the time of his death.

He was united in marriage with Mary J. Gibbons in Akron, May 15, 1907, Rev. Fr. D. K. Hurley officiating. One son, James L. Redmond, came to gladden this union.

Besides his wife and son, he is survived by three brothers and two sisters—James B. Redmond, of Le Mars, Iowa; Thomas J. Redmond, of Akron, Iowa; Maurice B. Redmond,; Miss Anna Redmond and Miss Mary R. Redmond, of Le Mars; also by an aunt and uncle, Mary C. Floyd, of Union, Iowa, who attended the funeral and Matthew Lamb, of Platteville, Wis., as well as other relatives.

Mr. Redmond always took an active interest in public affairs and was a staunch Democrat, being a leader in the councils of that party in Plymouth County. Before coming to Akron, he served a term as assessor in Grant Township, this county, and was assessor of the Town of Akron for about twenty-five years. He served as justice of peace here for a dozen years.

Upon the death of Mayor A. L. Yeaton, of Akron in June 1926, Mr. Redmond was appointed by the council as his successor and filled out the balance of his term of office. He was elected mayor in March, 1928, and served the following two-year term. He was a loyal and consistent member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, of this city, and when the new church, rectory and parochial school of that denomination were erected about twenty-five years ago, he served on the building committee. He was afterward elected secretary of the parish and served several years, and then was appointed treasurer and filled that position until his resignation on account of illness in the fall of 1928. A man of modest and unassuming nature, he possessed a degree of dignity and kindly and sympathetic traits that gained him the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact. Upright and honorable in his dealings, a devoted husband, father and brother, and a valued friend and neighbor, he will be genuinely mourned and missed from the daily walks of life.

Funeral services were held in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Tuesday, April 29, at 10 a.m. Requiem mass was read by Rev. Fr. J. A. Roder, the pastor assisted by Rev. Fr. E. F. Casey, of Denison, Iowa, former pastor here, and Rev. Fr. L. J. Cooper, of St. James Catholic Church. A beautiful tribute was paid by Rev. Fr. Roder to the life and character of Mr. Redmond. There was a very large attendance at the funeral and the business houses of town closed during the service as a tribute of respect. The pallbearers were Frank Coyle, E. P. Klauer, Michael Foley, J. J. Aalfs, Dick Bohlken and F. W. Burnett. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery here.

Relatives present at the funeral from a distance were: James and Maurice Redmond and Misses Anna and Mary C. Floyd, of Union, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. John Clark, Parnell “Day and Miss Kate O’Day, of Sioux City; Ed Bride, of Remsen; James P. Bride, of Sioux City; Ed. Muth,, of Hawarden; as well as many friends from the surrounding towns and territory.
