Note: Mother's maiden name was Albert.

M. H. Jans, a former well known and respected resident of Akron, but recently of Carter, S. D., passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Heeren, west of here in Union County S. D., last Thursday afternoon, after an extended illness, of cancer of the stomach.

Martes H. Jans was born in the state of Illinois, July 20, 1861. With his parents he moved to Wheatland, Cedar County, Iowa. At Lowden, Iowa, March 5, 1884, he was united in marriage with Emma Barinsky, at which place they resided for a number of years. In 1886 they decided to go west and located in Johnson Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. They farmed there until 1893, when they moved to Akron and this remained their home until October 1909, when he took up a claim near Witten, Tripp County, S. D.

On June 30, this year, M. Jans came to Akron, seeking medical aid, and from here he was accompanied by relatives to Rochester, Minn., for further medical advice, but he was told his illness was too far advanced for medical help, so he returned to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Heeren, west of this city.

He leaves to mourn his departure three sons and three daughters: Mrs. Ed Heeren, of Akron, Iowa; Grover Jans, of Hawarden, Iowa: Mrs. Joe Gapter, Mrs. James Jensen, Herbert Jan and Martes Jans, all of Witten, S. D.; also five brothers and two sisters. His wife preceded him in death thirteen years ago.

Funeral services were conducted in the Akron M. E. church Saturday afternoon by Rev. Weaver, of thee Pleasant Hill (S. D.) U. B. church, assisted by Rev. G. J. Poppenheimer, of Akron. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends. Interment was beside his wife in Riverside Cemetery.
