SHOCK TO FRIENDS

MRS. GOTTLIEB KOENIG STRICKEN WITH APOPLEXY WAS CONVERSING WITH HUSBAND

Passes Away Very Suddenly When Apparently In Best of Health and Spirits —Deceased was Greatly Beloved in a Large Circle.

Mrs. Koenig, wife of J. G. Koenig, residing on Court street, dropped dead at her home yesterday morning about half past eight. Her sudden death comes as a great shock to her aged husband, her family and her many friends.

Mrs. Koenig was apparently in her usual health and was conversing with her husband on ordinary topics when she was stricken.

A physician, who was hastily summoned, ascribed the cause to apoplexy. Mrs. Koenig with her husband and children, celebrated her sixty-eighth birthday on Sunday and she was in the best of spirits and all enjoyed the happy occasion. In her death the community loses one of the best of women. She was a devoted wife and mother and her home life was ideal. Her affections were centered in the welfare of those around her and she was untiring and zealous in making life for all those with whom she came in contact, brighter, happier and nobler. Since early childhood she was a member of the United Evangelical church, and was a consistent member and active in work in the societies and various organizations of the church. She was for seventeen years president of the Woman's Missionary society of the Emanuel church. Mrs. Koenig was greatly beloved by many friends, who through long intimacy and pleasant association had learned to know and appreciate her admirable qualities of mind and heart. She led a noble Christian life and always used a kindly influence for the betterment and uplift of moral and social conditions.

Mrs. Koenig was born in Washington, D. C. on August 6, 1848. Her maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Merryman. She was united in marriage at Baltimore, Maryland, with J. Gottlieb Koenig on September 25, 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Koenig enjoyed nearly fifty-one years of married happiness, celebrating their golden wedding last year. To their happy union eight children were born, one son died in infancy and their daughter, Mrs. Philip Schneider of Hinton, died a few years ago. The children left with the stricken father to mourn the death of a devoted mother are, Mrs. H. G. Moeller, of Davenport, Mrs. W. H. Zimmerman, Mrs. G. Hulsebus, of LeMars, Herbert B. Koenig of Delia, Alberta, Canada, J. G. Koenig, captain of company K now stationed at Brownsville, Texas, and Walter Koenig, of this city. There are nineteen grand children and one great grand child.

The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at the residence on Court Street at half past two.

The members of tho family abroad have been notified and will arrive in time to attend the funeral.
