Katherine "Sis" Varenhorst, 96, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with Reverend Greg Gabriel officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Jack Guenthner, Roger Klopp, David Plueger, Jim Farley, Bruce Kruse, Alan Feuerhelm.

Katherine Marie Kuehn was born August 29, 1915 on the family farm in Washington Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa to Fred and Anna (Draham) Kuehn. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on October 31, 1915. She was later confirmed in 1930 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Johnson Township. As a young girl, Sis attended country school near her home.

Katherine was united in marriage to Fritz Varenhorst on March 4, 1941 at her parents farm in Washington Township. Sis and Fritz farmed in Washington Township for many years. They attended St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was active in the W.E.L.C.A. and served as the organist for many years. In 1979, Sis and Fritz retired from farming and moved to Le Mars and joined St. John's Lutheran Church. She again was active with the W.E.L.C.A. group and volunteered to play the piano and organ at local nursing homes for services for over 20 years. She also enjoyed quilting for "do days" at church for several years. In October of 2010, Sis moved to Park Place Assisted Living.

She enjoyed her flowers and gardening and loved baking homemade treats for family and friends. Sis was also known to enjoy trips to local casinos to play a slot machine or too. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Survivors include a son, Dean Varenhorst and his wife Jeanne of Le Mars; two grandchildren: Shelly Lawrence and her husband Stacy of Sioux City and Mark Varenhorst of Merrill; a great grandson, Dominic Varenhorst; a sister, Martha Hamdorf of Phoenix, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Lois Varenhorst of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Anna (Draham) Kuehn; husband Fritz in June 1979; a brother, Caryl Kuehn; and a foster sister, Helen Varenhorst.
