Fritz Varenhorst

Fritz Varenhorst, 83, of Le Mars died Thursday June 26, 1997, at his residence.

Services were held Monday, June 30 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Kramer officiating. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Varenhorst was born Oct. 10, 1913, in Preston Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of Henry R. and Aldena (Ludwigs) Varenhorst. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school in Preston Township. He married Katherine Kuehn on March 4, 1941. The couple farmed in Washington Township from 1941 to 1977, when they retired and moved to Le Mars. After he retired, he still farmed with his son.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Merrill, Iowa, and later a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dean and Jeanne of Le Mars; two grandchildren, Mark Varenhorst and Shelly Zeman; a step great-grandson, a sister and her husband, Beverly and Robert Jurgenson of Sioux City; four brothers and their wives, William and Ruth, Erwin and Myrna, Norman and Lois, and Elmer and Cleone, all of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Eva Varenhorst; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Elsie Varenhorst and two brothers, Harry and a brother in infancy.
