BOY KILLED BY A FALL FROM HORSE
Jackie Harms Found Dead At Side of Road By Brothers
Jackie Harms, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harms of Washington township, was found dead by the roadside . a short distance from his home Friday evening. Death had been caused by a fall from his horse. Jackie was 9 year, two months and 26 days-old at the time of his death.
The boy left his home about 5:30 o'clock, riding a horse. Apparently this was the last time he was seen alive. About an hour later he was seen lying in the ditch by Billy Jahns of Merrill. Mr. Jahns hurried to the August Braband home where he learned that it must be the little Harms boy. He then drove to the Harms farm and informed the parents. George and Fred Harms drove to the spot immediately, only to find that their brother was beyond all earthly help.
Efforts to reconstruct the accident were unsuccessful. Investigation showed that there was a little mud on the horse, which straggled home alone, and it is thought that perhaps the horse lost its footing and fell with the boy, possible causing internal injuries and perhaps injuries to the brain resulting in quick death. There were no marks on the body except a small bruise on the head.
Jackie Harms was the youngest child in the family. He leaves a devoted father and mother who are inconsolable in their grief, and eight fond brothers and sisters, who are: George G. Harms, Charles F. Harms and Mrs. Margaret Bowers of Leeds, Iowa; Albert Harms of Sioux, City; Fred, Milly, Bertha and Pearl, living at home. Carl Schultz of Le Mars is his grandfather
The funeral was held today 1:30 o'clock from the home, and at 2 o'clock from St. John's Lutheran church, Rev. J. J. Vollmar in charge, and Luken's taking care of the arrangements.
Jackie Harms was born January 29, 1920, in Washington township. He attended the county school in his district. He will be greatly missed by his little playmates with whom he was a great favorite.
