PIONEER UNION COUNTY WOMAN IS CALLED BY DEATH

Last Rites For Mrs. M. Kjose Were Held On Monday Afternoon

Mrs. Mike Kjose, one of the early pioneer residents of Union county, S.D., passed away at her farm home, seven miles west of Akron, at midnight Wednesday, November 30, 1938, at the age of 72 years, 4 months, and 1 day.

Ingeborg Ofstehage, daughter of Peter and Bertha Ofstehage, daughter of Peter and Bertha Ofstehage, was born in Gausdahl, near Lillehammer, Norway Gausdahl, near Lillehammer Norway, on July 29, 1866. Among her intimate belingings, tucked away in the old family Bible, was found a short history of her life, written by herself, from which we quote; "I was born in Norway, 1866, July 29th. I was baptized in the Lutheran faith by Rev Bomer. I came with my parents to America i 1867, settled on the old homestead (Union county, Dakota Territory), where Theodre and Jenie Ofstehage now live, the same year. I lived there until I got married. I have gone through the early grasshoper years, the blizzards, and the snow winter of 1880 and 1881. The flood came in March, the spring of the year when I was confirmed by Rev. Nessa. I then worked out and made my living until I was united in marriage to Mike Kjose in 1889. For two years we stayed on the old Kjose farm, then we bought a home place in Sioux Valley township, where we lived the rest of our days."

On this farm Mrs. Kjose labored and spent her ife, faithful and unassuming as a wife and mother and as a member of the church. To the home God gave nine children, seven of whom are living. One assed away in infancy and the oldest daughter Mrs. Earl Beeler, died in the year 1918, leving a child of a few week. Clarence, who then was reared in the home of Grandmother Kjose. Her husband, Mike Kjose, preceded her in death on January 30, 1931.

As early as 1928 Mrs. Kjose felt the effects of a stroke which has recurred from time to time. She had thus labored the past years under the distress of a growing feebleness. The past six months she has been confined to the bed, patiently and hopefully awaiting the call which came to her, surrounded by her children, at midnight on Wednesday of last week.

She leaves to mourn her passing: Four sons, Oluuf, Martin, Alfred, and Theodore, all of the home commnity; three daughters, Bertha (Mrs. Richard Olso), of Obert, Nebr.; Mabel (Mrs. Ness) and Mae (Mrs. Sorenson), of Sioux City, Iowa; also two brothers, Ole and Theodore Ofstehage, and three sisters, Mrs. Annie Hanson, Mrs. Mattie Hanson and Jennie Ofstehage, all of Union county, S. D., besides 17 grandchildren and a host of friends to cherish te memory of this good woman.

Funeral services were held Monday, at 1 p.m. at the home and at 2 p.m. at the So. St. Paul Lutheran church in Union county, Rev. W. IL Aamoth officiating. Interment was in Riverside cemetery, Akron.
