DEATH CLAIMS A PIONEER FARMER OF UNION COUNTY

Mathias Kjose Was One of the Early Sioux Valley Township Settlers

Mathias Kjose, better known as Mike Kjose, passed away at his home six miles west of Akron in Sioux Valley township, Union county, S. D., Saturday, January 30, 1932, at 6:46 p.m., of apoplexy, aged 75 years, 3 months and 5 days.

Mathias Kjose, the son of Ole and Gunild Kjose, was born in Gustal, Norway, October 25, 1856, where he was baptized and grew to manhood. At the age of thirteen years he emigrated with his parents to America, settling on farm in Brule township, Union county, S. D., one-half mile north and east of the South St. Paul Lutheran church.

In 1871 he, with twelve others, was confirmed in the St. Paul church by Rev. Nesse, and remained a member of this church until his death. Mr. Kjose experienced the early hardshiph of the pioneer period of this section and has grown up with the country. In 1889 he was married to Ingeborg Ofstehage. To this union God gave nine children, seven of whom are living. With his chosen helpmate, he made his home on farm six miles west of Akron, which he had purchased, and this remained his home until death called him.

His days were full and filled with physical vigor as from year to year he turned the soil and reaped of its fruits. Not until the past few years did his robust health begin to diminish. On April 2, last year, he sustained a slight stroke of apoplexy, which left him weakened and helpless. Recurring strokes have come at regular intervals during the past ten months, leaving him weaker and making him more of a care. Death came peacefully following one of these strokes Saturday evening.

He leaves to mourn his departure: His widowed companion, Ingeborg, who cared for him so patiently during his illness; three daughters, Mrs. Richard Olson, of Obert, Nebr.; Mrs. Joseph Ness and Mrs. Irwin Sorenson, of Sioux City, Ia..; four sons, Oluf, of Sioux City, and Martin, Alfred, and Theodore, all of the home vicinity; four brothers, Tom, Ole and Ed., of Akron, Ia.; John of Elk Point, and Martin, of Sioux City, besides eleven grandchildren, and a host of friends, who extend sympathy to the family.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the South St. Paul Lutheran church conducted by Rev. W. I. Aamoth, the pastor. Interment was in Riverside cemetery, Akron, beside a daughter.
