Dean A. Rowe, 84, of Le Mars passed away peace-fully Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Dean Allen Rowe was born March 14, 1930, in Le Mars, to Harlan and Ethel (Gabel) Rowe. Dean was a lifelong member of the Plymouth Presbyterian Church having been baptized and confirmed at the church. Dean had participated in youth programs, Friendship Club, and choir. He had volunteered wherever needed at the church as well having served as an elder.
He attended country school and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1947. In high school, he participated in FFA, music and track (having been a member of a relay team that set a record that stood for 51 years). Following high school, Dean attended and graduated from Wayne State College. In college he participated in track, music, and cheerleading.
Following graduation, Dean enlisted in the United States Air Force. He received training in Biloxi, Miss., in control tower operations.
Dean was stationed at Bentwaters, England where he met his future wife, Jean Rayner. Dean and Jean were united in marriage on Oct. 10, 1953.
Following his discharge from the Air Force, Dean and Jean returned to Plymouth County to farm on the Rowe family farm that was established by his grandmother and father. Dean continued farming for the next 50 years. In the late 1990s, his son, Steve, took over the farm and Dean helped him for several years.
He was proud to be a farmer and livestock producer and even more proud to have his son continue on the farm and hopefully his grandsons.
Dean and Jean were blessed with two children, Sharon and Steve.
Dean enjoyed attending his children's school activities and in later years his grandsons activities.
He also enjoyed playing horseshoes with friends and was the "horseshoe superintendent" at the Plymouth County Fair for many years. Dean enjoyed meeting many friends throwing shoes in Iowa and Florida where he won the Senior Olympics for horseshoes.
