LE MARS, Iowa | Loris Heeren, 95, of Le Mars passed away early Friday morning, May 10, 2013, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., with the Rev. Greg Gabriel officiating. Interment will be 1 p.m. Monday in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Craig, Iowa. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be 2 to 6 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will continue 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Loris Ruth Caroline Gronemeyer was born Jan. 20, 1918, on the family farm in Preston Township, rural Ireton, Iowa, to Fred and Caroline (Marienau) Gronemeyer. Loris was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She attended country school at Preston No. 1. As a young woman, Loris worked on the farm and neighbors’ homes.
She was united in marriage to Gene Gabel on Dec. 18, 1937, at the St. John Lutheran Church parsonage in Craig. The couple farmed until Gene passed away in January of 1969. In March of that year, Loris moved to Le Mars. She enjoyed working as the men’s dorm housekeeper at Westmar College for nine years. Loris later married Herman Heeren on June 4, 1977, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig. The couple continued to make their home in Le Mars. Herman passed away in 2005. In September of 2011, Loris moved to Park Place Assisted Living.
Loris was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. In earlier years, she loved to go to dances and tending to her garden. Loris enjoyed visiting with people and staying in touch with family and friends and playing cards. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit to everyone she met. Loris loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and later in life, her great-grandchildren, often sharing, "How blessed I am."
Survivors include her children, Gene and Sondra Gabel of Sioux Falls, S.D., Wanda and Wendell Oltmanns of Le Mars, and Debbie and Bob Gibson of Le Mars; grandchildren, Kelly (Dorothy) Gabel, Shelly Gabel, Mark (Deb) Oltmanns and Tyler Gibson; greatgrandchildren, Joshua, Elijah and Hope Gabel, Devon, Cole and Desirae Oltmanns and Brett Oltmanns; a granddaughter-in-law, Sally Oltmanns; a brother, Wendall and Carmen Gronemeyer of St. James, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Frances "Shorty" Hazel of Akron, Iowa, and Leonard Wiltgen of Le Mars; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Caroline (Marienau) Gronemeyer; husband, Gene Gabel in 1969; husband, Herman Heeren in 2005; grandson, Kevin Oltmanns; two great-grandsons, Noah Gabel and Kyle Oltmanns; a brother, Lyle (Ella) Gronemeyer; and two sisters, Velma Wiltgen and Velgene Hazel.
Pallbearers will be Mark Oltmanns, Kelly Gabel, Tyler Gibson, Brett Oltmanns, Joshua Gabel, Cole Oltmanns and Devon Harmon. Honorary pallbearers will be Shelly Gabel and Desirae Oltmanns.
