Gene Gabel of Sioux Falls S.D. died Monday, June 16, 2014. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 19 at Peace Lutheran Church, and burial followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton, Iowa.
Gene Arthur Gabel, son of Gene G. and Loris R. (Gronemeyer) Gabel, was born October 15, 1940, in Akron, Iowa. He graduated from Akron High School in 1959. Gene then attended one year of college at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. In 1961 he entered the U.S.S. Air Force and after basic training, he took advance training in the military public health and preventive medicine field. Gene spent 13 months in Korea. He returned to Amarillo AFB in Texas, where he completed his military duty in 1965.
On October 1, 1966, he married Sondra Van Wyhe in Ireton. He worked with his father until 1968 when he began a career with CIT Financial in Sioux City. He was promoted to loan manager in 1972 in Sioux Falls. In 1988 he started working for Greentree Financial in Sioux Falls and worked there until 1999 when he began work with Toner Plus. After ten years the company was purchased by Century Business Products and he continued with the company until ill health forced him to retire in 2011.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion, Post 15 and a life member of the V.F.W. Post 628
Survivors include his wife, Sondra; a daughter, Shelly Gabel, and a son, Kelly (Dorothy) Gabel, all of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda (Wendell) Oltmanns and Debra (Robert) Gibson, both of Le Mars; an uncle; and a sister-in-law, Yvonne Van Wyhe of Sioux Falls.
