DEATH CLAIMS NONOGENARIAN
CHARLES BARTHOLE WAS AN AGED AND WELL BELOVED CITIZEN OF COMMUNITY
Charles Barthole, aged 90 years, one of the pioneers of Remsen community, died December 19, in the home of his niece, Mrs. Marienne Barthole, living northwest of Remsen following a brief illness.
Charles Barthole was a native of the village of Bissen, Canton Mersch, Luxembourg, a member of a family of seven children, of whom he was the last to survive. He was born October 6, 1841. At the age of 37 years he came to this county, going to Peoria, Ill., where he joined his elder brother, John, and the two spent several years there, employed at various lines of occupation. The brothers came to Remsen in 1882, and with their savings purchased an eighty acre farm four miles south of Remsen, the place now being part of the I. H. Schulte farm. They struggled faithfully during the early pioneer days and by dint of hard work and careful management they were able to provide for the comforts and necessities of their declining years.
The brothers retired in 1899 and moved to Remsen, purchasing residence property. The elder brother, John, died sixteen years ago, and his widow passed away five years later, in 1920. After her death Charles went to the farm of his nephew, Jim Barthole, in fredonia towship, andlived there until death.
The funeral was held Monday morning with services in St. Mary's church in Remsen, with the pastor, rev. H. J. Schieler, in charge. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery. Pallbearers were: John Bentz, Sr., Nick Kirpes, George Homan, J. P. Beck, Wm. Holton and Henry Offermann.
