DONALD BURNIGHT CALLED BY DEATH LAST WEDNESDAY

Rites Held Saturday For Esteemed Former Akron Resident

Donald J. Burnight, 33, of Spencer, Iowa, a former resident here and at Chatsworth, whose illness was noted in these columns last week, passed away on Wednesday evening, February 4, 1959, following surgery at Veterans' Hospital, Sioux Falls, S. D. He had been admitted to the hospital for obervation January 14.

Donald Joseph Burnight was born on August 13, 1925, at the Hawarden Hospital and was baptized in infancy. He spent his childhood and youth in his parental home at Chatsowrth and later attended the Hawarden High School, from which he graduated in 1943.

On June 12, 1945, he entered the service of his country in the United States Army during World War II and served in GErmany as a part of the military polie stationed there. He received his discharge from the army on November 30, 1946. He was a member of Hoschler Post, No. 186, American Legion, of Akron, and had served as its commander.

Upon receiving his discharge from the Army he went into the grain business at Chatsworth and continued there until the fall of 1958, when he, together with his wife, moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he purchased a Sinclair station.

On August 13, 1957, he was united in marriage with Miss Marcie Nelson. The wedding took place at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, Minnesota. For some over a year, they made their home in Akron, where Marcie was teaching the theird grade in the Akron pubic school. They were both members of the Immanuel Lutheran Churc in Akron.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joel Burnight, and his brother, James.

He is survived by his widow, Marcie; his mother, Mrs. Nellie Burnight, of Chatsworth; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jepsen, also of Chatsworth; a great number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and his many, many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:15 o'clock at the Barnard funeral home, Hawarden, and at 2:00 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran church, Akron, Rev. David J. Roy officiating. Mrs. Milton Anderson sang, "My FAith Looks Up to Thee" and "In the Garden." Mrs. Henning Shoulberg was organist. Pallbearers were Stanley Ludwig, Lowell Ludwig, Harold Stephenson, Jack McInnis, Robert Alderman, and Harold Moeller.

Members of Hoschler Post conducted military rites at the graveside in Riverside Cemetery.
