Helen Marie Neary, 76, of Sioux Falls, S. D., A former Akron resient, died Sunday (Jan. 13, 1991) in Sioux Falls.
Services will be held Thursday (Jan. 17) at 1 p.m. at Christ The King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Fr. Richard Baumberger will officiate. Burial will be at 3:45 p.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Akron, Ia., with Msgr. Gerald Lyon officiating. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Chapel of Sioux Falls.
Helen Marie Neary was born July 13, 1914, of American parentage in Canada near Alameda in Saskatchewan, Dalesboro District, where her parents were engaged in wheat farming. Her parents were edward Francis and Mary Ann (Agnes) Neary. She attended grade school in Akron, Ia. from 1921-1929, where her parents resided at that time. Her high school years (1929-1933) were completed at Elk Point, S. D., where her family farmed. She attended college at Briar Cliff college in Sioux City (1934-1938) earning a BA degree.
In 1945, after five years teaching English in high schools in South Dakota and Nebraska, she attended the College of Saint Catherine in St. Paul, Minn., earning a fifth year egree, a bachelor of science in library science. In 1945, she was named head of the Children's Department of Sioux Falls public library in Sioux Falls, S.D. and served in this capacity for 34 years until her retirement in 1979.
Miss Neary was a member of Christ The King Catholic church and held a membership in various professional civic, and social organizations during her career. She was a member of Zonta Internationl, a classified service organization of executive women, for more than 30 years.
Survivors include include one brother, Vincent Paul Neary of Wauwatosa, Wisc., and three of his five children, Mary Ann Neis, Thomas Neary and Susan Teresinsk. Her sister Vivian preceded her in death in 1963 leaving eight children, her nieces and nephews Dennis Wamser, Terrence Wamser, Patrick Wamser, Maureen Sprong, Eileen Baldus, Bonnie Coraiski, Barbara Kinsland, and Peggy Gekien.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Earl Edward.
Memorials may be directed to Christ The King Catholic Church, Sioux Falls, or the Sioux Falls Public Library, children's department.
