DR. W. J. BRUNNER CALLED BY DEATH LAST WEDNESDAY

Rites For Esteemed Akron Citizen Held Saturday Morning

A sense of deep sadness and loss came to this community in announcement of the passing of one of its widely-known and highly esteemed citizens, Dr. Walter J. Burnner, at the Akron Hospital Wednesday, July 7, after an extended illness, aged 83 years and 19 days.

Walter J. Brunner was born June 18, 1882, at Prairie City, Iowa, the son of Henry and Martha Brunner. He received his early education in county schools; attended Capital City Commercial School at Des Moines; Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, and taught school for four years in country schools near Prairie City.

He then entered Keokuk Medical College and was graduated in 1909 from the School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. He interned at st. Mary Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis.

On February 25, 1912, he was united in marriage with Miss Edith Gillin, of Sioux City. He began the practice of medicine at Westfield Iowa, in 1910. Dr. and Mrs. Brunner came to Akron in 1914 and he continued to practice here until about twelve years ago, when he suffered a stroke while on vacation at McAllen, Texas.

As a medical practitioner, Dr. Brunner was most proficient, understanding and dedicated to the welfare of his constituents. His memory will long be cherished by many in this community, all of whom extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved wife daughter, and other relatives.

Dr. Brunner was a member of Wesley Methodist church, serving on the official bord of the church for many years, He was a member and president of akron board of education for 18 years. he was a member of the Akron Park Board and was active in promoting the building of the new Akron Hospital.

Also, he was a member of Freedom Lodge, No. 436, S. E. & A. M. He was a pst master of the lodge and a past patron and member of Vesper Chapter, No. 61, Order of the Eastern Star, and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Survivors besides the widow include one daughter, Mrs. Ray Hammerly of Newton, Iowa, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Wesley Methodist church, Rev. Donald Roberts officiating. Mrs. Esther Ferguson was soloist. Mrs. eSther Ferguson was soloist. Mrs. Orin Harris was pianist. Caskertbearers were W. L. Mitchelll, Harry Nelson, Howard Reynolds, Mac Thorson, Lesley Anderson, and edwin Nelson. Masonic rites were held at the interment in Riverside Cemetery.
