Westfield Youth Found Dead at Uncle's Farm
Funeral services for Paul John Badtram, 17, who was found death Saturday at the farm home of an uncle near Westfield, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sioux City. Rev. Russell J. Olson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery under direction of the Manning-O Toole Funeral Home.
Pallbearers, all classmates at Westfield High School, will be Noah Porter, Gene Fredrickson, Gordon Knapp, Tim Blum, Tom Kelly, and M. M. Macklem.
Dr. Sherman Lindell of Le Mars, Plymouth county medical examiner, said an autopsy report was expected to be released Tuesday. An examination had showed that an infection in the body had caused brain deterioration.
Paul, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Badtram, Sioux City, had resided the last six years at the farm owned by his uncle, Paul Bockelman.
Sheriff Jim Mertes investigated. Dr. Lindell said the boy had been horseback with another boy when he became ill. He went home to rest. The boy according to Dr. Lindell, said that he thought Paul just went to sleep but about two hours later he was found dead by his uncle. A few days ago Paul was not feeling well but did not see a doctor, the uncle said.
The youth was a senior at Westfield High School. He was born Nov. 2, 1947, at Sioux Falls. He had attended Irving, Woodrow Wilson and West Junior schools in Sioux City.
Survivors besides the parents include two brothers, Patrick and Ronald, both of Sioux City; three sisters, Grace Ann, Amelia, and Kathy, all of Sioux City; his grandmother, Mrs. Lea Bockelman of Sioux City, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Badtram of Bennett, Iowa.

----------------FIND YOUTH DIED OF BRAIN TUMOR
Autopsy Reveals Cause Of Death Of Paul BadtramIt was reported by Dr. Sherman Lindell, Plymouth County medical examiner, that an autopsy following the death January 16, of Paul John Badtram, 17, Westfield student determined that it was caused by a tumor on the brain stem.
Dr. Lindell said a Sioux City pathologist at first found swelling in the brain and further investigation showed the tumor.
This is quite rare, Dr. Lindell commented. At first the pathologist looked for a toxic infection which might have caused the swelling. Pressure on the vital area of the brain, caused by the tumor, caused the youth to stop breathing, the doctors explained.
Paul had gone horseback riding with a friend in Sioux City Saturday and complained of not feeling well. His friend went with him to the home of an uncle, Paul Bockelman, with whom Paul had resided for six years. The dead boy was found later by the uncle.
Funeral services were held in Sioux City, Tuesday and burial was there.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Badtram, Sioux City, two brothers, and three sisters.
