George F. Matern, longtime Plymouth County resident, passed away January 29, 1954, at his farm home in America township after a sickness which lasted three years.
Mr. Matern had spent most of the last few months in a wheelchair following a long hospitalization. He was 74 years of age.
George Matern was born December 18, 1879, at Peoria, Illinois. He came to this community with his parents in early childhood. On Sept. 13, 1922, he was united in marriage with Louise Wormke in LeMars. The couple farmed just south of LeMars in America township since that time. Mr. Matern also ran a custom cornsheller and maintained a small machine shop at his farm home until failing health forced him to retire.
Funeral services were held today, Monday, February 1, 1954, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 9:00 a.m. with Msgr. J. D. Fisch officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery under direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Louise, of LeMars; a daughter, Mildred Matern of Sioux City; three sisters, Mrs. William (Clara) Davis of Buena Park, California; Mrs. Andrew (Mayme) Klosterman of Sioux Falls; Mrs. John (Olivia) Neisius of Miniota, Minnesota; and a brother, Jack, of LeMars.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, Gladys, who died in infancy, and a son, George Jr., who was killed in an auto accident at the age of 12 years. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Fred and Charles.
Remains were at the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home until time of services.
Pallbearers were: Frank Hentghes, John Zeig, Louis Schafer, Joe Ernsterhoff, Dan Zeig, and Al Kemp.
