Jane Petersen, 80, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 11, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa with Reverend Tim Geitz officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be after 5:00 p.m. Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service Sunday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Monday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Memorials can be made in Jane’s name to Hospice of Siouxland.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Chris Klohs, Justin Petersen, Joshua Petersen, Wesley Bunjes, Jamie Petersen, Bradley Bunjes, and Kyle Petersen. Honorary casket bearers will be her granddaughters: Sherri Durst, Alyssa Wildeboer, Angela Penne, Sara Puetz, Jodi Sievers, Mindi Anderson, and Kelli Langel.

Jane Louise Bortles was born March 27, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa to Roy and Ida (Wingert) Bortles. She was baptized at Wesley United Methodist Church in Sioux City and later confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Jane was raised east of James, near Sioux City, Iowa and received her education in Leeds. Jane was united in marriage to Darvin “Dar” Petersen on December 1, 1952 in Dakota City, Nebraska. They were blessed with four children: Roger, Carol, Connie, and Charlotte.

They farmed, milked cows, and raised hogs on a farm near Hinton, Iowa before settling on a farm in Stanton Township. Jane had worked as a waitress at the truck stop in Le Mars and was a substitute cook at the Union school for a number of years. She had also worked at Pretty Plus in Le Mars for several years. Jane was a talented and gifted cook and baker; having operated a custom cake decorating business out of her home for many years.

Jane and Dar enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time at their vacation homes at Lake Okoboji, Iowa and Branson, Missouri. They also enjoyed going to Ballroom Dances and Square Dances around the area. Along with her gifts of baking and cooking, Jane enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, and gardening.

Survivors include her children: Roger Petersen and his wife Rosie of Le Mars, Carol Bunjes and her husband Jeff of Alta, Iowa, Connie Klohs and her husband Bill of Le Mars, and Charlotte Langel and her husband Jeff of Arnold’s Park, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Survivors also include a sister, Alice Ross and her husband Bill of Bronson, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Melfred “Bud” Petersen and his wife Marlene of Hinton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ida (Wingert) Bortles; her husband Dar on January 12, 2014; a great granddaughter, Avery Durst; and a son-in-law Ed Wagner.
