Fred Claesson Sr., longtime community leader dies at 90

Fred Claesson Sr., 90, died Saturday evening, Feb. 11, 1978, at the Akron nursing home following a brief illness.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Akron, with the Rev. David J. Roy officiating. Mrs. Carol Harris, organist, accompanied Robert Brown as he sang "Bless This House" and "Peace in the Valley". Pallbearers were Stanley Anderson, Milton Anderson, Henry Anderson, Roger Johnson, Alvin Frisk and Arvin Finzen. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery under the direction of the Schroeder Funeral Home.

Mr. Claesson was born Oct. 9, 1887, in Limmared, Sweden, to Claes and osephin Petterson. He was baptized and confirmed in the South Osarp Lutheran Church of Limmared, sweden. He came to the United States in 1909 and shortly after became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was among the first members of that congregation.

He married Hilma Carlson. Oct. 18, 1917 in Chicago, Ill. She preceded him in death Dec. 10, 1951.

Mr. Claesson farmed in the Chatsworth and Akron areas until his retirement in 1951. He served as a member of the Plymouth county board of supervisors from 1944 to 1952; a member of the farmers Co-op elevator board of directors for 27 years, 17 of those as secretary-treasurer; a member of the board of directors of the Plymouth Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Le Mars for 18 years; served six years on the Akron school board, and served several years as a township trustee. He served as deacon and trustee of the Immanuel Lutheran Chruch. He was a member of Freedom 434 and order of Eastern Star of Akron.

Mr. Claesson was not only a fine and friendly neighbor, but was active member of his church and community.

Survivors include his son, Fred R. Claesson Jr., Akron; one granddaughter Mrs. Steve (Nancy) Tonkin of Webster City, Iowa; one sister Jenny, of Limmared, Sweden; and several nieces and nephews in Sweden.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in Sweden.
