Livestock commission head Dawayne Raby takes life
Dawayne A. Raby, 47, 2820 S.Cypress St., president of the Sioux City Livestock Exchange, died Sunday (March 6,1977) in a Sioux City hospital. Dr. Thomas Coriden, Woodbury county medical examiner, ruled the death a suicide. Mr. Raby had shot
himself with a pistol at his home and died at the hospital approximately an hour later, said Dr. Coriden.Mr. Raby was the owner of Petersen Helseth, Raby commission firm at the Stockyards. He was a commission man with Rice Brothers and then with Swanson Gilmore, Carroll before buying into his firm. He had been president of the Livestock Exchange for the past three years.
Mr. Raby was born April 9, 1929, in Merrill, and attended high school in Akron. He joined the Army of Occupation in Japan. Following that, he returned and farmed at Akron for approximately one year before moving to Sioux City.
Mr. Raby married Gayle J. Slocum Nov. 19,1948, at Elk Point. S.D. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran church and Morningside Masonic lodge 615.
Survivors are his wife; five sons, Craig and Robert, both of Sioux City, Jeffrey of Milford. and Mark and John both at home; one daughter, Mrs. R. J. (Dianne) Hirsch of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Bonnie) Hammerstrom of Chicago; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert (Tillie) Raby of Merrill; and two grandchildren.
There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m, Monday at the W. Harry Christy funeral home in Morningside.. Funeral services are tentatively set for 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran church, 5200 Glenn Ave, Sioux City. Rev. Jim Munson, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
