Former Akron Resident Succumbs To A Long Illness On April 30
Mrs. Joseph H. Smith, of Sioux City a member of early day Akron families passed away at her home there at 2505 1/2 Isabella Street last Thursday after a long illness, aged 84 years, 3 months, and 6 days.
Hattie Pendleton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pendleton, was born January 24, 1875, in Lafayette County Wisconsin, and came to Le Mars, Ia., with her family when she was a small girl. Her marriage to Joseph H. Smith took place at Akron on November 28, 1894. The couple moved from Akron to Le Mars in 1918 and operated the Grand Central hotel there until 1930.
Following Mr. Smith's death in 1931, Mrs. Smith made her home in Sioux City. She had resided here 27 years and attended the Methodist church.
Survivors include two sons, Leslie J. of Le Mars and Fay of Akron; a a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Robinson of Sioux City; a brother, William Pendleton of Le Mars; a sister, Mrs. Leon Ogden of Akron; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Two brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Wesley Methodist Church in Akron, Rev. D. L. Guinn officiating. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
