Note: His mother's maiden name was Thornton.

Died at his home south of Akron, in Westfield Township, Monday morning, June 15, 1908, Herbert L. Smith, aged sixteen years, five months and three days.

Deceaded had been ill for four years with heart trouble and complications. Following a severe attack of pneumonia he was treated in the hospital in Le Mars for five weeks last spring. Slight improvement resulted at the time but the doctors held out no hope for his recovery. He made a brave and uncomplaining fight against overwhelming odds. His untimely taking away, coming so soon after the death of his father on January 25th last intensifies the sorrow of the bereaved mother and other loved ones, to whom the community offers its sincere sympathy.

Herbert Leslie Smith was born on the home farm in Westfield Township, Plymouth county, where he grew to young manhood. He was a bright lad of unusally happy disposition and beloved by all who knew him.

Beside the mother there are left to mourn his departure three brothers, and three sisters--Joseph, of Westfield Township; John, of Lucas, S. D.; Frank at home; Mrs. Lee Norton, of Sioux City; Mrs. Jas. Buranek, of Lucas, S. D, and Miss Nettie at home.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. E. Plummer at the home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery.
