OBITUARY
Brief mention was made in these columns last weekof the death of Mrs. Elizebeth Smith at her home in this city, after a long illness of diabetes and complications. She passed away September 11, 1917, aged 68 years, 10 months, and 13 days.
Elizabeth Thornton was born at Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, October 28, 1848. She grew to young womanhood there, and on Christmas Day, 1869, was united in marriage with J. B. Smith. they resided in Canada until the spring of 1879, when they came to the States, locationg at Elk Point, Dakota Territory, but a short time later they moved onto a farm in southwestern Plymouth County, Iowa, near the old Sioux River Bridge.
They were compelled to vacate this place on account of the high water in the memorable spring of 1881, when they bought the Fine farm in Section 17, Westfield Township, which remained the family home for many years. On January 25, 1908, Mr. Smith passed away after a brief illness of pneumonia. There came to bless their union ten children, three of whom died in infancy, and one son, Herbert Leslie, died only a short time after his father, June 15, 1908, at the age of 16 years.
Three sons and three daughters survive--Joseph, of Le Mars, Iowa; John, near Lucas, S. D.; Frank near Akron, Iowa; Mrs. Lee Norton, of Sioux City, Ia.; Mrs. James Buryanek, near Lucas, S. D., and Miss Nettie Smith, of Akron. In the loss of an ever kind and devoted moter, the community tenders its sympathy to the sorrowing children. She will be mourned by many, who found in her a kind friend and helpful neighbor.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. E. Volck in the Akron Baptist Church last Friday afternoon, where a large number of friends assembled to pay a last tribute of respect. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, beside the husband and son.
Among the relatives who came from a distance were : Joseph Smith and family, of L e Mars; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Norton and daughter, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Norton and daughter, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Mr. and Mrs. James Buryanek, of Lucas, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Alex Card, of Hawarden; Mr. Card, of Elk Point.
