DIED
SMITH--At his home, four miles south of Akron, Iowa, Saturday morning, January 25, 1908, John B. Smith, of pneumonia, aged 62 years, 6 mohths and 28 days.
Deceased was first seized with an attack of the grip, which developed into the dread pneumonia. He made a determined fight against the disease, but his age and weakened condition made the strugge an unequal one and of brief duration. He had also been a sufferer from stomach trouble for several years.
John B. Smith was born in Stow, Lincolusire, England, June 28, 1845, where he spent his boyhood. He came to Canada in June, 1852. On Christmas day, 1869, he married Miss Elizebeth Thornton at Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, adn to them were born ten children, three of whom died in infancy, there surviving four sons and three daughters--Joseph, of Westfield Township; John, near Lucas, S. D.; Frank and Herbert, at home; Mrs. Lee Norton, of Sioux City; Mrs. James Buryanek, near Lucas, S. D., and Miss Nettie, a home--all of whom were present at the time of his death. In the spring of 1879 they came from Canada to Elk Point, Dakota Territory, and a short time later moved onto a farm in south west Plymouth County, locating near the Old Sioux River Bridge. They were driven out of there by high water in the river in the memorable spring of 1881 and afterward located on the Flue farm in the Section 17, Westfield township, which has since remained the family home. Mr. Smith was an industrius and progressive farmer. His dealings with men were upright and he was held in high regard by all who knew him.
The sympathy of the community is extended the bereaved wife and children. Mrs. Smith and son, Herbert, have also been very ill with the grip the past few weeks, both being still confined to their beds.
Deceased has one brother, Wm. S., at Beaverton, Canada, and one sister, Mrs. Woodbury Card, near Elk Point.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon at two o'clock by Rev. H. Robinson, of the Akron Baptist Church, quite a nimber of neighbors and friends being present. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, north of Akron.
Mr. and Mrs. Woodbury Card and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Card, of Elk Point, were among the relatives who came from a distance.
