MRS. M. BECKMAN CALLED BY DEATH LAST THURSDAY

Rites Held Friday For An Esteemed Akron Resident

A well-known and respected pioneer resident of this community, Mrs. Mary (John) Beckman, passed away at Akron Community Hospital last Thursday, December 14, after a brief illness, aged 90 years and 3 months.

Mary Gerdes was born September 14, 1877, in Whittmund, Germany. She came to the United States in early childhood and resided for a short time at Peoria, Ill., then coming to the Akron vicinity, where she resided the remainder of her life. She was united in marriage here with John Beckman, who preceded her in death in 1896 (correction: should be he died in 1919.)

Mrs. Beckman was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, of Akron, also of the A.L.C.W. A kind and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was held in high regard by all who knew her for her many fine qualities.

Survivors include three sons, Fred, of Simi, Calif., and Henry and Herman, both of Akron; four daughters, Dena Calhoon, of Custer, S. D.; Rose Beeler, of Wilcox, Mont.; Anna Hartman, of Alcester, SD; and Mrs. Iver Pollock of Akron; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church, Rev. Harris Hostager officiating. There was congregational singing and Mrs. Glen Gabel organist. Casket bearers were grandsons of the deceased Marvin Hartman, Norman Hartman, Edward Hartman, Dwight Calhoon, Jim Beckman and Charles Hall. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
