SPENT HIS YOUTH IN LE MARS

After an illness dating back over a period of several years, caused by chronic neuritis, and from which he had been confined to bed since returning from the south in January, where he had been for his health, Edward Meade Carpenter, a former well known Le Mars young man, died at his home in Cedar rapids on Thursday.

Mr. Carpenter was secretary of the Carpenter-Johnson Wholesale Flour company at Cedar Rapids since 1907. During his recent ill health he had kept at his work, maintaining an acute interest in the business until he was confined to bed three months ago.

Edward Meade Carpenter was born in Cleveland, N. Y. on November 2, 1875. He came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Carpenter, to Le Mars in 1890. He attended school here and assisted his father in the grocery business. He learned the jewelry business in Le Mars with the jewelry business in Le Mars with the late C. W. L. Trottnow. Later he traveled for twelve years representing the Plymouth Milling company and formed a wide acquaintance throughout the state. After leaving Le Mars he went into business on his own account in Cedar Rapids and became a successful and popular merchant.

He was united in marriage in Le Mars on March 29, 1898., with Miss Minerva Knapp, daughter of Mrs. Pitt Seaman, of Struble. She died in 1903. He leaves on son, Harold Knapp Carpenter, eighteen years of age, Mrs. C. A. Tyler, of this city, is an aunt of the deceased.

Mr. Carpenter was a member of the order of Elks.

The remains were brought here for burial on Sunday. Brief services were held at the city cemetery, Rev. J. K. Hawkins officiating. The pallbearers were R. B. Dalton, R. J. Koehier, Warren Lillie, J. G. Koenig, J. F. Beattle and Fred Moore.

Ed. Carpenter was a most popular young man during his residence in Le Mars and had many warm friends here.

The remains were accompanied from Cedar Rapids by his partner, Mr. Johnson, B. S. Church, Miss Griffin and Miss Dempsey, all of Cedar Rapids.
