Tuberculosis with all its terrors has been the cause of the first death in one of the largest of the families of pioneers. Lois Mary Gardner, at the early age of twenty years, two months and two days, gave up her life to its clutches at 5:30 a.m., May 8, 1908, at the home of her brother at Yankton, S. D., after five months of terrible suffering, borne uncomplainingly and with utmost consideration for those whose lot it was to minister to her needs. Lois' genial disposition won for her many friends who grieve in sincerity at her early demise. She was born March 6, 1888, on tho Gardner homestead in Washington township, Plymouth county, Iowa.
Previous to her illness she was a faithful employee in the Dakota Herald office at Yankton and it was while returning from her work one evening, in drenching rain, she contracted the cold that terminated in the dread disease.
She leaves, besides her parents, four brothers James, of Dalton, William, of Adaville, Richard and John, and four sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Mathwig, Ellen, Bertha and Nellie, all residing on a farm near Yankton.
The funeral was held at the Clark street Baptist church in LeMars at two o'clock p. m., Sunday, May 10th, Rev. Stengel officiating at the services. Interment was made in the beautiful cemetery on the hillside, where, one by one, many others have found a resting place for weary bodies beyond the care and toil of the world.
