John Steffen, 68, life long resident of Plymouth county, died at his home, 600 Sixth street SE., Tuesday (July 7, 1942) morning, while in his sleep. Mr. Steffen had been in poor health the past three or four years and for the last four weeks had been confined to bed. He had undergone operations for a serious internal malady several years ago and although able to be up and around was incapacitated for hard work. Mr. Steffen followed the occupation of farming and dairying during his active life.

He was born near Merrill, October 28, 1874, and was a son of Henry Steffen and Margaretha Manz. He was married November 19, 1902, to Christina Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Truels Peterson, in Washington township. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Sprecher of Le Mars, Truels Steffen of Forest City, Iowa, and three grandchildren, Jack, Judy and Jim Steffen, two sisters, Mrs. Frank Dean of West Le Mars, Mrs. Carrie Williams, Eatonville, Wash., and a brother, Henry Steffen, of Dickson, Cal. His wife preceded him in death five years ago and a brother, Will, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Steffen, living here all his life, was well acquainted in the county and widely known. He was a good citizen and neighbor and well liked in the community.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church in this city. Rev. T. C. Seibert, pastor of the Plymouth Presbyterian church, conducted the service.

The pallbearers were John Bunch, Fred Hirt, Matt Neisius, George Remer, Henry Remer and Frank Varenhorst.

The arrangements were in charge of the Mauer funeral home.
