Mrs. Matthew Steffen, a pioneer of Kingsley vicinity, died at St. Vincent's hospital in Sioux City, on Monday night, February 20. She had been ailing for several months and it was finally decided the only possible hope of prolonging her life was an operation. In consequence she was taken to Sioux City where she underwent an operation, but her system had been so weakened by her long illness that she was unable to rally and she passed out of this earthly life on the date above stated.
The deceased was born at Galena, Ill., December 20th, 1860, where she grew to maturity.
On May 25th, 1880, she was united in marriage to Matthew Steffen and in 1883 moved to Plymouth county, locating on a farm northwest of Kingsley, and they moved to Kingsley in January, 1919, where she resided until the time of her death.
To this union was born ten children. They are Mrs. M. L. Ginsbach, Bernard, Frank and Rose Steffen, of Kingsley, John and Anthony, of Halliday, N. D., Mrs. Earl Kennedy, of Le Mars, Sister Mary Dolores and Christine Steffen, of Sioux City. A son, Peter M., preceded his mother to the spirit world on September 23, 1898.
Mrs. Steffen was a kind and loving wife and mother and a true friend to all who knew her, and to know her was to love her.
Beside her husband and children she leaves to mourn her loss three sisters, Mrs. Joe Shaumberg, Mrs. Will Gillman and Miss Elizabeth Hupperts, of Mineral Point, Wis., and one brother, Joe Hupperts, of Plattville, Wis.
She will be greatly missed by her many friends in Kingsley and vicinity who extend to the bereaved family and relatives their heartfelt sympathy.
