Chester L. Mesner, 82, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in North Port, Florida following a brief illness. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Timothy Geitz will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars with military honors conducted by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the church.

Chester LeRoy Mesner was born on January 6, 1932 in O’Brien County, Iowa to Walter and Sylviamae (Traver/Mesner) Cresson. He attended Paullina schools and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, earning an honorable discharge at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

On June 6, 1954, Chester and Shirley R. Reich were united in marriage. After their marriage the couple settled in Le Mars where he worked for Plymouth Electric Cooperative Association (now North West REC) for 37 years, retiring in 1994.

Chester was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion in Le Mars.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley of Le Mars; two sons, David of Le Mars and Keith (Laurie) of Sac City, IA; a daughter, Kimberly (Mark) George of Cherokee, IA; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandchild; a brother, Dale (Gail) of Belmont, CA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Thomas Cresson; 2 sisters, Lavonne (Bonnie) Mulder and Patricia (Norton) Baker.

Respective of Chester’s wishes, rather than sending expressions of sympathy or memorials, his family suggests that individuals do a random act of kindness for a stranger.
